Created during the Prohibition when adding citrus and sweeteners helped make ‘bathtub gin’ more palatable, this cocktail is ‘the bee’s knees’. That slang term means ‘the best’ and this easy sipper is perfect for a warm Friday night on this first evening in June. For those curious about honey syrup, it is simply 1 part honey dissolved into 1 part hot water. This thinned honey probably contributed to the cocktail’s name and being thinned, the honey is much easier to mix with the gin and lemon juice. I like to think of this drink as a sibling to the recently posted Gimlet – and each are easily interchangeable to satisfy your tastes with a minimal number of ingredients…
Recently I had a discussion with a subscriber that asked if I could create more vegan dishes or at least add a few more side dishes to the collection of recipes. It just so happens that I also had a conversation with a co-worker about cooking carrots sous vide – so naturally this dish fits the bill for both requests! Cooking root vegetables like carrots sous vide is really simple and the results are deeply flavorful. Like cooking proteins such as steak or chicken, vegetables like carrots can also be tossed in a hot pan to glaze and create those delicious slightly caramelized edges. In researching this dish, I found many maple glazed carrot sous vide recipes, which I am sure are all very tasty. Nearly all…
Recently I received a a teaser for this recipe via the New York Times Cooking section and I just had to try it. Of course, that means I needed to rework the recipe for one or two servings so I would not be eating an 8 to 12 serving kuchen by myself! So I went to work and the results were simply amazing. So amazing in fact, I just had to share them with you. This kuchen is wonderfully flavored with lemon, honey, ginger… and naturally apple. This recipe is easy to prepare as well; the toughest part is waiting for the kuchen to cool so you can enjoy it! Save Print Apple Kuchen Prep time: 45 mins Cook time: 30 mins Total time: …
Well, I jinxed myself. I was thinking last Sunday that I had gone through this whole winter without having been sick once. No flu. No cold. No sniffles, sneezing, coughing, or runny nose. I was feeling glorious… until Tuesday evening when my throat felt raw, the sneezing began, and that was the beginning of the end. But this unfortunate malady makes this week’s Friday cocktail all the more relevant. One tinted with the fond memories of childhood. Yes, I said it. We were given hot toddies as children when we were sick. So what’s the big deal? It worked to help us feel better and get better. And tonight, this drink is on deck because I need it. It’s a double…
I made this sauce for the Sous vide Seared Ahi dish and just knew I had to share it as a separate post. This sauce is beyond description – slightly sweet, slightly sour, slightly spicy and simply amazing. I decided to use some local honey (my neighbor keeps bees and always a shares some of his honey with me!) instead of sugar to simplify this sauce from a standard gastrique. I thought sweet and sour are great and all, but I wanted to add a bit of heat to it… and hot red chilis were available at my local store. So I added them to this sauce and kicked it up just a little bit, which I think you will enjoy. Give it a try on seared…
Today’s experiment was with cookies. No, not the annoying web cookies stored in your browser, but that holiday treat everyone enjoys – at least everyone I know. I based this recipe on a Lebkuchen recipe, making some slight adjustments. The cookie it produces is a flavor bomb – honey, cinnamon, cloves, nutmeg, almonds, ginger, vanilla and rum. That’s right, I wrote ‘rum’. I made a simple rum glaze for these warm spiced treats and these cookies could be called chewable Hot Buttered Rum! So preheat that oven, we have family and friends needing these delights! Save Print Spice Cookies Prep time: 10 mins Cook time: 15 mins Total time: 25 mins Serves: 60 Ingredients 1½ cups…
How about another cookie recipe to help you bring holiday cheer to your friends and family? As a child, I remember my mom making a honey cookie that required a month of rest, but the recipe was lost long ago. So I spent some time searching and found a recipe close to what I remembered my mom making (but doesn’t require the month long slumber!) so today I am giving it a try (with my usual adjustments!) and sharing the results with you. Yeah… I could have made these from scratch, but when you have Jiffy Cornbread Muffin Mix in the pantry, why not use it! I make these muffins per the box instructions, except I add honey and jalapeno Tabasco sauce. Here is the scoop on these slightly sweet with slight heat cornbread mini-muffins. Honey and Jalapeno Cornbread Mini-Muffins Ingredients: 1 box Jiffy cornbread muffin mix 1 egg 1/3 cup milk 2 tsp honey 2 tsp jalepeno Tabasco sauce (the Green one) Preparation: Preheat the oven to 400 degrees. Prepare the muffin tin with grease, non-stick spray, or use paper cups. In a large bowl, whisk the ingredients together making sure to not over-mix. Some lumps are fine. Let stand for 3 – 4…
