Crimson King Cocktail

Well, I am back from Chicago and ready to update the blog. Here is a picture of our booth (www.vestaprecision.com) at the International Home + Housewares Show. The show was amazing – huge and energetic – and I met so many nice people that I want to thank for visiting us. I also enjoyed fabulous food and cocktails in the Windy City and can think of nothing more apropos than to share this intensely flavorful cocktail with everyone.  It’s a luxurious beauty befitting of its royal name – the Crimson King Cocktail. This deep red tipple balances spicy rye, sweet cherries, bitter herbs, and rich coffee flavors. As a variant of the Boulevardier, I knew I would like this drink. And I do! Enjoy this…

Caffè Corretto

Here is another coffee based cocktail, a twist on the Italian ‘corrected coffee’. Caffè Corretto describes anytime espresso has been ‘augmented’ with a spirit like grappa, sambuca, brandy, etc. For my variation, I decided to increase the coffee depth by adding Galliano Ristretto while adding a subtle sweetness and herbal aspect with amaro and simple syrup. This cocktail is the Flatliner’s best friend – strong and reliable, yet easy going and self-effacing. Caffè Corretto is another easy sipper that works best as an after-dinner libation or dessert accompaniment – perfect for what I wanted tonight. Ahhh… time to relax and enjoy the evening, just me and my ‘corrected coffee’. I hope you enjoy your Friday evening too…

Elysium

Tonight’s cocktail showcases a new ingredient, amaro, and a few old favorites. I found this recipe on the Washington Post courtesy of the now closed Poste Moderne Brasserie and I have to admit I was extremely intrigued by the combination of ingredients. This recipe is my take on the original. The original recipe included brewed coffee that I substituted for Galliano Ristretto while playing with the proportions. I think I have a solid drink here – slightly bitter yet slightly sweet with a wonderful slight syrupy mouth feel. Maybe it should have been named ‘Unrequited Love’ with a description like that! Anyway, here is to your first Friday of October and let’s slide into the beginning of the holiday season with a…

Palmetto

Happy Friday everyone!  Tonight’s cocktail is perfect for this wonderful Summer evening – the Palmetto. Typically this drink is made with white rum and dry vermouth… and from what my research found, the resulting drink is barely drinkable. Well, we can’t have that here on Cooking-4-One, can we? So I opted to follow the research and use an aged rum and sweet vermouth. The resulting rum variation of a Manhattan works nicely and I even give it a nice little tweak. I would have thought adding sweet vermouth to a sweet liquor like rum would end in disaster, but it doesn’t… especially with my special ingredient, Galliano Ristretto. For this cocktail, I would use a rum you enjoy…

Crosswalk

Tonight’s cocktail comes from a recent article in Men’s Journal; This Summer, Drink More Whiskey: 6 Perfect Cocktails. I found this cocktail intriguing for two reasons. First, I am certain there is a typo in the recipe – it should not take 14 ounces of coffee liqueur –  and second because it sounds like a snazzy and jazzy Manhattan… and I like a good Manhattan. So, I picked up some Carpano Antica Sweet Vermouth to be sure I was using all the correct ingredients and I adjusted the 14 ounces of coffee liqueur to 1/4 ounce and got busy making this cocktail. And…. wow!  This drink is a snazzy and jazzy upgraded Manhattan. I even garnished mine with one of my…
