This recipe is based on Nick Caruana's Serious Eats posting.
Serves: 1
Ingredients
  • 1½ ounces Pendleton 1920 rye whiskey
  • 1½ ounces sherry (see Notes for specific sherry tasting profiles)
  • ¼ ounce Grand Imperial
  • 2 dashes Angostura bitters
Instructions
  1. Chill a cocktail glass.
  2. Add ice, rye, sherry, Grand Imperial and Angostura bitters to a mixing glass.
  3. Stir until well chilled, about 20 seconds.
  4. Strain into the chilled cocktail glass and serve.
Notes
Notes: Research shows Hugo Ensslin's 1916 recipe for this cocktail did not specify which type of sherry to use. For a lighter and drier flavor, use a Fino or Manzanilla sherry. If you desire a cocktail closer in taste to a Manhattan, use Amontillado or Oloroso sherry.
