Here in the greater Seattle-Tacoma area, everyone loves the scones at the Western Washington Fair. Or at least that is what I hear… because I have never had a ‘Fair Scone’. To be honest, I wasn’t interested in eating what I thought were dry, dusty, failed biscuits. But one trip to Cannon Beach Oregon and a stay at the Stephanie Inn many years ago changed all that. Each morning, there were scones available for breakfast and my companion asked if I wanted one. Seeing my nonchalance and noncommittal attitude towards enjoying these beautiful scones intrigued and irritated her. She asked what I had against scones. I remarked I had nothing against scones I just had never enjoyed them before (I am sure…
Here is a treat for Fall – pumpkin donuts. This recipe makes approximately eighteen regular size cake donuts; the perfect amount for sharing. It is simple to prepare and delivers a delicious reward when you are done. Also it gives you another reason to use that donut pan you bought after reading the Devil’s Food Donuts posting in May! These pumpkin spiced donuts are slightly sweet, slightly spiced, moist and tender and everything you want in a cake donut. As for topping, I went with half in a cinnamon sugar coating and the other half glazed. Naturally, I opted to make a bourbon glaze which added an interesting and enjoyable flavor. Bring these to share with work colleagues, friends watching football (or baseball), or just to…
Have you ever had a hankering for some food item and just had to make it? That is what happened to me this weekend. I suddenly had a desire for a fruity coffee cake. So I searched the internet for a recipe that would satisfy my hankering and this recipe is what I found. This delicious coffee cake is based on the Noble Pig’s recipe for Raspberry Almond Coffee Cake. The easy recipe and delectable pictures told me this was the one, so here is my take on it. Of course I tweaked it a little and I liked the results. Naturally, I will leave the final judging to you when you make it! Save Print Blueberry Almond Coffee Cake Prep time: 30 mins Cook…
This interesting and versatile breakfast/dessert recipe comes compliments of The Baking Chocolatess. Anyone who knows me knows that I like apple fritters… I’ll even admit I like them a lot. So during my search for something other than a traditional fried apple fritter, this recipe screamed ‘Try me!’. Boy I am glad I did! This unique way of enjoying apple fritters is wonderful. Can you tell I am enamored with this recipe? Well, I am. So make room banana bread, apple fritter bread is getting into the rotation. You should add it to your baking rotation too! Today’s post is not a meal for one, but a party dessert that is certain to please. This cheesecake really rocks, but the topping wins the day. Most of the time I bring a main dish to these parties, but this time I decided to switch things around and bring a dessert. This cheesecake is a variant of the German käsekuchen which uses quark – an ingredient hard to find here in the states. So after doing some research and seeing several suggestions on what to use as a substitute, I opted for sour cream and ricotta cheese. And the results were impressive. The cheesecake won rave reviews but the smoked cherry topping was the overall star. Slightly sweet, slightly smoky and intensely cherry flavored…
Here is a delightful variant to my earlier Balsamic Cherry Yogurt Sorbet recipe. I had a yen for a light, slightly tart, slightly sweet dessert with this recent string of 90 degree days. And what’s easier than spinning some fruit, sugar and yogurt together, sticking it into a freezer to be scooped later at leisure. As a matter of fact, the toughest part of this recipe is the planning ahead so you can enjoy this delicious dessert when desired. Save Print Lemon Blueberry Yogurt Sorbet Prep time: 5 hours Total time: 5 hours Serves: 16 Ingredients 32 oz whole milk yogurt 7 oz sugar 3 oz blueberries zest and juice from 1 large lemon 2 tbsp lemon zest (zest from 1 large…
How about another dessert? Here we go with another cherry dessert and who can blame me? We are having a banner year for cherries in the Pacific Northwest and these gems are perfect for snacking and making desserts. Heck, I may even post how I smoke cherries for the Smoked Old Fashioned and Rob Roy cocktails given the amount of you asking about it! Well, back to this dessert. It is a simple, yet elegant dish perfectly suited for after dinner or even for breakfast. The cherries take center stage – encased in a slightly eggy custard with a golden brown top. Did I mention clafouti is versatile? That it is since you can use many different fruits like peach, pear, apricot, blueberries, raspberries, etc when making it…
Here’s a delicious dessert that perfect for Summer. This simple combination of ingredients and a little time in the freezer is well worth the effort and wait – and you don’t have leave home to enjoy freshly made frozen yogurt. Of course, you can play with other fruit and flavor combinations; this balsamic and cherry was just something I concocted on a whim. And am I glad I did! Lightly sweet and slightly sour, this dessert is great for satisfying that need for a sweet treat on a Summer afternoon or after dinner. Let creativity be your guide – the only requirements are the yogurt and sugar. The rest is up to your imagination! Save Print Balsamic Cherry Frozen Yogurt Prep time: 10…
Easy, baked donuts? Yes, please! I found this recipe on Jennifer Meyerling’s blog and tweaked it by adding cinnamon, nutmeg and vanilla. The only challenge is buying a donut baking pan (and waiting patiently for it to arrive). I found mine on Amazon – standard and mini donut sizes. These donuts are perfect for a party because they are so easy to make, so easy to personalize, and let’s face it – so delicious! They are great for satisfying your sweet tooth as well if you cut the recipe into thirds to keep the amount of donuts made to a reasonable number. Wait, is there a reasonable number of donuts? I don’t think so… Either way, you will enjoy this variation…
Here is a fast and easy way to make cake from a mix for one (or two). I used a Pillsbury Devil’s Food cake mix for this recipe and it worked out perfectly. I simply divided the cake mix and its preparation instructions into thirds. Finding the correct timing for the small cake was the trick – and of course making a small amount of frosting to top it. I opted for an amaretto cream cheese frosting which paired wonderfully with the chocolate cake. Here is how I did it… now you can too!
