My Background

It all started when I was a child… from the first time I made myself lunch heating up a can of cream of mushroom soup. Being able to cook well was something my parents fostered in me and my siblings. There were only 2 rules; leave the kitchen clean when you are done and eat your mistakes.  The first rule was simple to understand. My mom was not our maid. The second rule was a bit tougher to grasp. While on the surface it seems to be primarily about not wasting food (and thereby money!), what this rule really instilled in me was a way of understanding how flavors and textures blend and marry… or not!  I learned from experimenting with what I thought sounded good, actually turned out to be pretty terrible. But I ate my mistakes (and still do periodically!) to reinforce that learning about flavors and textures that make home cooked meals so rewarding. I am not a classically trained chef or professionally engaged in the food service business. I am just an ordinary person with an ordinary job and an ordinary lifestyle that enjoys eating well – healthy and delicious meals that I happen to prepare myself. I learn new things all the time – which I hope to pass onto you while I also hope to learn from you – the readership!

Why ‘Cooking 4 One’?

After working in the high tech sector for 20+ years, I routinely encountered many young college graduates in my career. Most of these young, driven professionals were dining out or eating prepared meals over actually cooking with fresh ingredients. Many were amazed that I cooked for myself nearly every night. It is with the spirit of helping the single person succeed in the kitchen that I created this blog. Hopefully it will foster a passion for cooking while you explore your own culinary creativity through tested recipes and simple tips for maximizing flavor and minimizing waste (and thereby saving money!). I learned this adage at an early age and it has served me well in my life – “Proper prior planning prevents poor performance”. I would be lying if I said there is no effort needed to succeed in the kitchen when cooking for yourself. I hope by sharing my tips for planning, preparing, and executing a meal and menu that you too can succeed in eating healthy and delicious meals of your own creation.
